Cost Sharing
When federal statute or agency regulations require that the university share in the cost of sponsored research projects, the university contribution is referred to as “cost sharing.” The terms “cost sharing”, “matching” and “in-kind” are often used interchangeably. In general, cost sharing represents the portion of project or program costs not borne by the sponsor. Typically, federal government cost sharing is offered in a proposal only when it is a requirement for the proposal or the program announcement.
If cost sharing is included as part of an awarded project, the grant specialist works with the PI to ensure cost sharing is documented and reported to the sponsor agency. Please consult the PAG for specific information on cost sharing. PIs and their staff may also attend the cost sharing workshop offered by the research foundation annually.
