SDSU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) ensures the protection of the rights and welfare of all human participants and provides professional guidance and administrative support to researchers.

Does your project involve Animal Subjects?
The SDSU IACUC is a committee of the University Research Council. Its members include the attending veterinarian, scientists, and community representatives. IACUC ensures that all research, testing and educational instruction involving animals is conducted in a humane manner using the fewest number of animals possible to obtain valid results.

Do you need to complete an Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Questionnaire?
SDSU’s Environmental Health and Safety develops and maintains programs aimed at protecting the safety and well-being of the campus community, ensuring compliance with local, state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to health, safety and environmental protection.
The EH&S Questionnaire must be completed if your project involves any of the following regulated materials:
- DEA Controlled Substances and Listed Chemicals
- Biological Hazards
- Chemical Hazards
- Ionizing Radiation
- Diving
Does your project require a biohazardous use authorization?
If you are using biohazardous materials or conducting experiments involving recombinant DNA in your laboratory, you must obtain approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). To start the process, you must complete a Biological Use Authorization (BUA) Form.

Are you required to complete a Statement of Financial Interests?
Statements of Financial Interests are required if you are receiving direct or pass-through funding from Public Health Service (PHS), PHS-related organizations, or the National Science Foundation (NSF).

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a PHS-related organization. If your award is funded by the NIH, all principal investigators and key personnel are required to complete an online conflict of interest training/tutorial. If you have any questions regarding this training, contact Ashley Rubio.

Statements of Economic Interests are required if you are receiving direct funding from any non-exempt private sponsor.

Does your project require Responsible Conduct of Research Training?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) both have requirements for training in the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR).
For NIH, the requirements for such training apply to all of the following:
