Foreign Travel
Employees of San Diego State University Research Foundation traveling to international destinations must obtain foreign travel insurance. Foreign travel insurance coverage is provided by SDSU Research Foundation.
Subject to terms, conditions and applicable exclusions, foreign travel insurance benefits include but are not limited to the following:
- 24/7 Assistance Services
- Primary Medical Expense and Emergency Medical Benefits
- Emergency Medical Evacuation
- Repatriation of Remains
- Accidental Death and Dismemberment
- Political Evacuation
- General Liability
- Excess Auto Liability
To Request Coverage
All international travel must be pre-approved per the current SDSURF process. SDSURF Travelers must first complete preapproval in Chrome River. They must also submit the new Foreign Travel Insurance Request Form (FTIP) through the new travel approval workflow in Adobe Sign. The Chrome River preapproval must be attached to the travel insurance FTIP form in Adobe Sign.
Please allow at least 30 days for processing of travel and insurance documents.
Travelers’ affiliation, rather than funding source, determines the FTIP approval workflow. SDSURF Risk Management only binds FTIP insurance coverage if the Traveler’s employment is solely with SDSURF ( not an overload status). If the employee is an SDSU employee please see Concur Procure-to-Pay Travel page for details on how to participate.
For countries on Travel warning list level 3 or 4, we will need the San Diego State University President or Designee travel approval completed on the FTIP form. If the country you are travelling to is a war risk destination, you will also need the Chancellors’s approval.
Requests for FTIP insurance coverage for travel that has already occurred will not be processed. For auditing purposes, a memo will be needed explaining the reason for late submission of requests for FTIP insurance coverage for travel that was already in progress when the request was made.
SDSURF’s Risk Management may be reached at 619.594.4076 or email at sdsurfriskmanagement@sdsu.edu.
In addition, it is important to gain as much information as possible about the countries that will be visited. Travel warnings, public announcements, consular sheets and tips on safety abroad are available at the U.S. Department of State web site at http://travel.state.gov.
Enroll in STEP
It is recommended that all employees traveling internationally also sign up for the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive information about travel conditions and emergency assistance while abroad.
