The Technology Transfer Office (TTO)
The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) protects and commercializes intellectual properties developed by the faculty and staff of SDSU and SDSURF. Protection includes prosecuting patents for the inventions made in pursuit of research grants, filing copyrights for the software developed as tools by our faculty, and providing management of confidentiality agreements with companies to ensure that inventions are not disclosed prior to filing a patent application. Commercialization includes developing the marketing strategy of each intellectual property, contacting potential licensees, negotiating transactions, and helping faculty spin-out and start-up companies.
The TTO also acts as a liaison between the university and outside business and political communities. Whether presenting at a conference or attending an industry-specific lecture, the TTO represents SDSU and SDSURF as a professional, innovative, and proactive university capable of a broad array of academic projects that support industrial and community initiatives. One of the strongest relationships is with CONNECT, which includes utilizing their expertise to fast-track licensing and entrepreneurship for SDSU's faculty inventions. Additionally, the TTO is a resource for intellectual property questions, issues with industry, and identifying unique grant opportunities.
As seen above, distinguished Professor of Chemistry William Tong's patented Laser Wave Mixing technique uses laser-based absorption techniques to provide chemical analysis at sub-parts per quadrillion sensitivity with best-in-class selectivity.
